Budgeting for home espresso by the machine's price tag is the most common mistake new buyers make. The machine is typically half to two-thirds of a setup that actually works — and then it costs money every year after that.
Year one, itemised
| Item | Budget | Mid | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Espresso machine | $300 | $500 | See the picks |
| Grinder | $60 | $250 | Hand grinder vs. decent electric |
| Scale (0.1g) | $20 | $35 | Non-negotiable — see below |
| Tamper | $0 | $25 | Usually included; upgrade optional |
| Water filter | $30 | $45 | Year one — the cheapest insurance you can buy |
| Fresh beans | $180 | $300 | $15–25/mo, ~2 drinks a day |
| Year one total | $590 | $1,155 | Machine included |
Compare that to the $400 you thought you were spending. The gap is not padded — every line above is required to pull a shot you can actually evaluate.
Why each "optional" item isn't
The scale
Espresso extraction is measured in seconds and grams. Without a scale you are not dialling in, you are guessing — and when a shot tastes wrong you have no way to know which variable moved. At $20 it is the highest-return purchase on this page.
The water filter
Scale is the number one cause of death for machines in this class, and it is almost entirely preventable. A filter costs roughly $30 a year against a $400 machine. If you have hard water, this line is not optional.
Fresh beans
A bag of beans past its peak cannot be pulled well at any pressure, by any machine, at any grind setting. This is the recurring cost people forget to budget, and it is the difference between the hobby being enjoyable or frustrating.
Recurring costs from year two
| Recurring | Annual | What happens if you skip it |
|---|---|---|
| Beans | $180–300 | You stop using the machine |
| Water filter / descaling | $30–60 | Scale failure — a repair or replacement |
| Gaskets & shower screen | $10–25 | Leaks and channelled shots |
| Yearly running cost | $220–385 | Excluding the machine |
What it saves you
The honest counterweight: two café drinks a day is roughly $1,800–2,600 a year. A $900 setup paid for itself inside the first year if you would have bought those drinks anyway. If you would not have, the machine is not saving you money — it is a hobby with a running cost, which is a perfectly fine thing to buy, just not the same claim.
